Associate Head Coach Giuseppe Papaccio, an All-American shortstop for the Pirates and an MLB Draft selection of the Chicago Cubs. As a senior at The Hall in 2013, Papaccio had one of the finest offensive seasons in Seton Hall history. Unanimously named a First Team All-BIG EAST selection and New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association's (NJCBA) Player of the Year, he finished ranked third in the BIG EAST with a .365 batting average and led the conference in doubles. Further showing his prowess for the two-base hit, Papaccio set Seton Hall's career record with 56 doubles and tied the single-season Pirate record with 24. Batting primarily in the cleanup position in the Seton Hall lineup, Papaccio led the Pirates in seven offensive categories, including batting average, slugging percentage and RBIs. With 237 career hits, only three players in Pirates' history have garnered more. Along with Assistant Coach Ryan Ramiz also a Seton Hall Graduate. Ramiz led the Big East Conference this past season with a .429 batting average as well as a .528 on base percentage. Ramiz was also one of only four players to be unanimously selected to the All-Big East First Team that year and was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 23rd round. Staff Includes Mike Sheppard Jr. from Seton Hall Prep and John Sheppard from Morristown Beard School 2023 Big East Coaching Staff of the Year Rob Sheppard was named the head coach of the Seton Hall baseball program on June 30, 2004, becoming the 17th head coach in the history of the baseball program, and just the third since 1948. He inherited a winning tradition and legacy left by his father, Mike Sheppard, Sr., who won 998 games in 31 years as coach from 1973-2003. Since taking over, Sheppard has continued to foster the culture of hard work on the field and academic excellence created by his father. During his 20 years at the helm, he has mentored four All-Americans and 62 Pirates that have earned All-BIG EAST honors. Furthermore, 39 of his Pirates have gone on to sign professional baseball contracts with Major League Baseball affiliated franchises, including seven in 2018, a program record. Sheppard’s 20 years at the helm rank third all-time at Seton Hall behind only Hall of Famers Mike Sheppard, Sr. and Owen T. Carroll. His 520 victories are second only to his father. Jimmy Moran Jimmy Moran was area scouting supervisor and Minor League coach for the Cincinnati Reds from 2016-2022 and enters his second season as pitching coach at Seton Hall. Coach Moran was picked by the Reds in the 2011 MLB Draft and he reached the highest level of the Minor Leagues with the Louisville Bats at Triple-A. Along with his scouting responsibilities, which covered multiple states, Moran has worked in a myriad of roles on the field developing pitchers with the Reds. He was the club's on-field representative for the 2019 USA Baseball Player Development Pipeline League before working in the Arizona Complex League as a developmental coach. Moran was responsible for 2017 fifth-round selection Mac Sceroler, who reached the Major Leagues in 2021. Moran was also the signing scout for 2021 first-round draft pick Matt McLain with the 17th overall selection. The 2023 Pirates ranked 1st in the Big East and 31st nationally in Team ERA, T-19th nationally with 5 shutouts and 30th nationally in H/9. |
